Maine Vitae Society was formed in 1997 with the express goal
of educating the public about abortion and its sad consequences.
It utilizes both television and the Internet to
achieve its goal.
Since its first major TV campaign in January 1999, Maine Vitae Society has
broadcast well over 35,000 thirty-second commercials throughout the state on both
network and cable stations. It is the only organization in Maine
doing so on a consistent basis.
In addition to its TV advertising, Maine Vitae Society is fully committed to
advertising on the Internet in order to reach young people. It is well
known that the Internet is the medium of choice for youths and if
you want to reach them you must have a presence there.
Maine Vitae Society’s advertising on the Internet is designed expressly to
get 12-24 year olds to click onto the acclaimed and effective website,
Teenbreaks.com. This site provides current, true, real life stories from
girls and young women who have had abortions and relate their deep regret.
There are also more cheerful stories from others who rejected abortion.
Another segment describes the various types of abortion including graphic
pictures. Other encouraging stories talk about adoption, abstinence and the
development of self respect.
It is a powerful educational tool allowing young people to spend extended
visits on the website learning the full truth about abortion. These visits
last up to 26 minutes and average about 13 minutes overall, enough time for
the viewer to absorb a wealth of sound information.
Activity on the website in Maine has grown beyond all expectations since its
inception in October 2005. Valid feedback indicates it is having a positive
effect not only at the middle and high school level but also among college
students.
It is evident that not only is our advertising increasing the number of
visitors to Teenbreaks.com each month but word-of-mouth is also playing
a role. It should be noted that the website contains a link to the
CareNet pregnancy support group where a viewer in need can get immediate
help. These connections, too, are increasing in number each month.
With both television and Internet advertising Maine Vitae Society is
educating a wide range of the Maine population about abortion. With
both mediums offering easy and quick access to help at CareNet
pregnancy support centers it is also providing a truly valuable
service to those in need.
Those
wishing to help support Maine Vitae Society directly may
do so by sending a tax-deductible donation to Maine Vitae
Society, P.O. Box 257, Auburn, ME 04212-0257.
